Community Heritage Ontario, in association with Archaeological Research Associates
Ltd. (ARA), and in partnership with the University of Waterloo’s Heritage Resources
Centre (HRC), undertook a study on the effect of perceived barriers associated with
insurance in relation to designation under Part IV and Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act
(OHA) by residential property owners. The study seeks to help understand: 1) if those
perceptions are substantiated, 2) why such insurance issues are occurring, and 3) if
they are, what might be done to mitigate the problem.
The study contacted close to 2000 designated and non-protected property owners as
well as heritage planners across Ontario to obtain responses to a series of insurance
related questions.
The report includes useful background information on this topic including, a glossary of
terms, a basic overview of the insurance process and industry and outlines the factors
and/or considerations associated with older/heritage buildings. The bulk of the study
and its findings are outlined in the study methodology, detailed study findings, and
summary of the insight gained while undertaking this study and potential future actions.
